Decolonization 50 Years After

We are beginning a new decade, the 2010s.

This means that it has been a half century since the 1960s.

The latter decade witnessed the greatest period of decolonization in history. The disintegration of empires was on a global basis.

In the ensuing 50 years, the newly emancipated peoples of the world have generally not made appropriate advancements in economic, social, and political matters. They are not materially or spiritually better off.

It is time for a reassessment of what progress has been achieved and what remains to be done. Let us hope that this will then result in a global rededication of effort and resources to the advancement of human civilization.

Bill of Rights Day 2009

Letter to San Jose Mercury News December 15, 2009

Editor:
Today (Dec. 15) was Bill of Rights Day, the 218th anniversary of the ratification of the first 10 amendments to the Constitution.
Were there articles or opinion pieces in the media? Did our political leaders stop and call attention to this most important date?
Did anyone notice? Did anyone care?
The Bill of Rights is the most important part of the Constitution. It guarantees our rights and our ability to hold on to our freedoms.
Of course, there are more important things to occupy our attention…What we will be getting or giving for Christmas, the latest foibles of celebrities, the scary headlines in the papers and on television, how are the local sports teams doing?
Do you ever wonder how America has survived for over two centuries? Beats me.

The San Jose Mercury News chose not to print this.
